Hunt Davies Tennent Architects

The Brief:

Provide a replacement skylight system for the Wellington Aquatic Centre, Kilbirnie. The system must be very low maintenance, provide unobstructed lighting and ventilation, and blend seamlessly with the roof and ceiling architecture.

Issues:

The old system did not blend with the interior design. It interlocked in direct line of sight, trapped moisture and dirt and cultivating all manner of moulds for everyone to see.

The ventilation covers added to the messy build up by trapping dirt and providing an entry point for insects.

Maintenance was untenable – the skylight panels could not be cleaned without physical removal from the roof structure. In some areas natural light was totally obscured by dirt.

The project had to be completed during the Centre’s six-week shutdown period.

The Solution:

Adlux created a made-to-measure skylight system in order to retain the Centre’s existing roof structure. Samples were left with the architects for their client’s approval.

Adlux chose their metal-interlock system as it concealed both join and ventilation mesh above a metal frame. In fact, the frame acts as a concealer/ joiner and ventilator all in one.

The metal inter-lock system was designed to be maintenance-free. The skylight is shaped to self-clean every time it rains, there is no visible dirt and moisture build-up and unlike other skylight manufacturers, Adlux includes insect protection as standard.

The result for Wellington Aquatic Centre is a clean, contemporary skylight system that looked good inside and out and will continue to do so with no maintenance for many years.
